Chronicles of Narnia
Cover Redesign
The Chronicles of Narnia is a 7 book series written by British author C.S. Lewis. Each book is a step into a new fantastical world. The series first came onto the market for purchase in the 50’s and the cover design of the books have not changed much since then. With the release of the Narnia films came new covers featuring imagery from the movie but even with that it doesn't seem like the book series has been given much attention. With that in mind I wanted to bring new life to the series by updating the covers in a manner that would give each book its own voice but also still feel like there was a connective theme.
Starting small I chose two out of the seven books to redesign. The first being The Magician's Nephew which is the first book in the series and an introduction into Lewis’s magical world. The second book chosen is The Lion the witch and the wardrobe which also happens to be the second book in the series.
While the covers feature different imagery and colors I still wanted there to be repeating elements that would aid in making the books feel connected. To do this I started by having the oval shape in the background to act as a sort of frame for the title and imagery of each cover. You’ll notice that the series title and author's name are also in the same position on each cover. Finally while I wanted the imagery on the covers to relate to the specific plot of the individual books I wanted the treatment to be similar. So you will notice that on each cover on the left side of the cover is an illustrated version of the image and on the right side is a silhouetted mirrored version.
